Closed Captioning problems in Premiere Pro CC on Windows

I am attempting to create closed captioning for my 1080p video in Premiere Pro CC. I have the latest, most up to date version of Premiere Pro CC. When I create my Caption file, I choose CEA-708, Service 1, but it doesn't give me the option to use the same resolution settings. The first issue that comes up is when I place my caption file into my timeline. It prompts me with the question to change my sequence settings to SD or to keep the settings the way they are. I obviously want to keep my sequence settings the way they are. Next I try to actually create the individual text captions, but there are many glitches within the captioning options. I am unable to change transparency options, I constantly have to fix the positioning because the text either isn't on the screen or is in the wrong place, and I also get the period symbol between each letter. Lastly, when I go to export out my video, and I want to create a side car file, I only get 3 options. I can create a MacCaption, W3C, or subrip. I want to create a .scc file but am not given that option. When I choose the export my video with MacCaption it gives me a .SCC file and not a .MCC file which is MacCaption.

There are literally glitches every step of the way and I am really frustrated. Please tell me I am doing something wrong so that I can get the captions I want. Otherwise I feel like the only way to get captions is by uploading to Youtube and creating captions that way.

Thanks for any help I can get!

Hi,

Kevin-Monahan's post is almost a year old. Any progress here?

Me too, I constantly have trouble with captions. For instance for one project (an interview series with 5 persons being interviewed and for each I create their own captions) I have successfully created the first three captions. I was able to adjust the captions to my liking (background opacity, font size, position and so on) but with the fourth all of a sudden the option of changing opacity is gone (the icon is greyed out).

When I duplicate the caption of person three hoping to be able to use the adjustments of that captions the text of person three stays visible even though I have deleted the text of that caption.

Any input? What can be done? Anything I am doing wrong?

I have tried for instance to Reset to Saved Layout (as somewhere I read Workspaces may causes problems).

Thank you for any help.

This thread was started during PR CC 2017. PR CC 2018 made significant changes to captioning, and there have been 3 updates since the initial 2018 release. There continue to be issues with captioning, but some of them are due to confusion over the changes that have already been made.

I suggest you create a new thread with your issue, and we'll see how we can help.

For example, 2018 added "Open Subtitling" as a caption type, but it is different from "Open Captions." One user was user open subtitling, and couldn't find the opacity slider. (I'm not suggesting this is your issue; yours is greyed out.)

Hi Triscari,

Might a "Scale to Frame Size" command assist you in scaling up the closed captions? I've heard of someone doing that with open captions. Let me know.

You can file a bug report for some of these issues. Sorry for the pain points.

Thanks,
Kevin
