Color Management and Wide Gamut question

I've started doing color correction in a Premiere Project with some Panasonic V-Log and Sony S-Log footage. I changed the Color Setup for the sequence to Wide Gamut (Toned Mapped) and the Output Color Space to Rec 709. Everything looks great, until I bring in either footage that is already Rec 709 or some motion graphics I created in AE. These clips look darker and desaturated when placed in the timeline. I tried to change the Source Clip color space, but none look correct. What must I do to get them back to their original look? Thanks!

For wide gamut working at this time, for graphics, set the Color Space Override to maybe Rec.2100/HLG or one of the log formats. That should fix that issue.

Hey @ssumm312 ,

Currently it is impossible to work in "Wide Gamut Tone Mapped" because there is no inverse of their tonemap transform which is needed in order to nullify it for material that is already in the same color space as the target display characteristics.

The only solution is to throw away your work and use Direct SDR Rec.709 instead, or render out your graded work and put that in an SDR timeline.

There were many issues with their updated color managent that I made Adobe aware of during it's development and it looks like they wont be addressed in the near future since it has been out for a while now already and no fix in sight. I warned them of the danger of fixing it 'later' potentially means a redesign because the current implementation doesn't allow addressing the issues without affecting appearance of older projects. It could come down to yet another new method of managing color with the broken one still there for backwards compatability sake. It's a mess if you ask me...

Here's my last post about it.

Here are some shots of my setup, which is on a Mac.  This first one is with the Color Setup in Direct Rec 709, and the motion graphic on the right looks correct:

Here it is with the Wide Gamut turned on, and the motion graphic looks darker:

What is your sequence color space? In fact, it would be most useful to have a lot more information ... so screengrabs of your entire CM section, the Settings tab of the Lumetri panel, with every section open.

And pics showing the darker Rec.709 media compared to the other media.

Hey ssumm312,

Sorry for the issue. Could you share screenshots of your Lumetri Color Settings panel for the log files and the rec 709 footage? That will help us understand the issue.

You mention that the rec709 media looks darker and desaturated. Is that compared to the preview from a media player or the Source monitor or another Sequence within Premiere Pro?

Please also let me know if you're on a Windows or a macOS system.

Thanks,

Ishan
