Question

Consolidate all clips in a sequence by MOVING instead of copying?

I'm in kind of a weird situation where I need to delete everything off of a hard drive EXCEPT the files currently being used in this Premiere sequence.

So I could use Project Manager to consolidate all of the clips I need into a new folder and then delete everything else (everything is backed up elsewhere.) But I'm dealing with many terabytes of data and hundreds of clips, so that will take forever. And I don't need the clips duplicated/copied onto a new drive - they are already on the drive, I just want to move all of them into a new folder, which would take a few seconds in Finder.

Is there any way to do this? Or does anyone have a different idea of how I could find all of the files I need on the Finder level and delete everything that's not being used?

This is very risky, as you might overlook something and delete it accidentally.

Project Manager is limited in that it does not offer a "move" command, only variations of "copy."

Do you have an external drive you could copy everything to before you erase this disk? That would be the best and safest option.

It's not really that risky when you have everything backed up on multiple redundancy drives. I'm just re-purposing one of our backup drives to shuttle some media to an online editor, but I need to free up space on the drive.

Thanks, it appeared that way, I just figured I'd check. I have been interested in the third party Plumepack, which is supposed to be better than Project Manager, but that doesn't seem to have a move option either. It makes sense, why would a tool inside Premiere have the capability to move items on the Finder level? Dangerous stuff. And yet, I'm in a situation where that would have been very helpful.

Yes, that would be the first choice, however I needed this done in a couple of days. It would have taken days for a large enough drive to arrive, then another two days to copy 20TB of media onto the new drive and then back onto the original drive. Which is a bit ridiculous considering all of the media is already on the correct drive, I just need to clear out everything else.

I ended up exporting an ALE and then manually deleting every file not being used in the cut at the Finder level. It took a while, but I put a podcast on and it's done now. Before emptying the trash, I opened the project in Premiere, and of course I had deleted a couple files accidentally. I found them in the trash and had them back in their place with one click. Then I emptied the trash, and now I'm all good. All of the deleted files still exist on other drives, but I don't need them on this one anymore.
