Consolidate and transcode, render and replace, neither works when editing in a 9x16 timeline.

I want to use the consolidate and transcode feature to cut down on my project size, because I have a ton of footage that I don't need other than what was used in the project. I would like to get rid of the fluff, but keep a workable project to refer back to in the future. The project is completely done now, and I was given melts of footage so I really only need the parts of each melt that was used in the final edit, and want to delete the rest of it. Ideally, Consolidate and Transcode extracts the part of the melt that I used, so that I can delete the full file and only keep the parts that were used in the edit. HOWEVER, because I'm editing for social media, none of my sequences are 16x9, the frame rates don't match because I speed ramped a bunch, and therefore consolidate and transcode will only copy the full files to a new location. This doesn't help because it really doesn't save any space for me. I've heard that Render and Replace could be a good work around, but Premiere won't even attempt it because of mismatched footage/sequence settings. Any ideas on how to get around this? I have some nests and after effects comps in the timeline as well.

TL;DR 16x9 footage in 9x16 timeline will not consolidate and transcode because of the mismatched settings.

@Kevin-Monahan Here's the screenshots of the events panel. Premiere immediately gave me these errors after I clicked "ok" in the render and replace dialogue box.

Hey Joseph,

Correct. Your footage cannot be consolidated unless is it intraframe footage like ProRes. The code has not yet been updated to handle H.264 or HEVC to date. It is on the roadmap, for sure. Sorry for the hassle!

Cheers,
Kevin

If just for archiving you could consider:

Export a 4444 of your 9x16 timeline for reference.
Create new sequence at source media resolution at 16x9 or whatever aspect ratio it is
Remove all crops but leave on all speed ramps and other effects
Burn off a 4444 Quicktime of the edit at source res
Make a new 9x16 - use scene edit detection and copy paste scaling attributes across

Hmmm could work as a workaround but I'll admit it's a bit more work than I'd like hahaha if all else fails though, this seems like a good solution thank you!!

I am in no way, shape, or form affiliated to these guys, but this plugin is a life-saver when it comes to managing projects. I gave up on Premiere's project manager a long time ago, it's honestly pretty useless.

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for the post. Render and replace with ProRes or ProRes LT should work. When you say Premiere Pro won't attempt it, what happens? H.264 still cannot be consolidated no matter the sequence size. Sorry about that. I hope we can help you.

Thanks,
Kevin

I should've taken a screenshot of the events panel. Next time I'm at my computer and can replicate it I will post. But it says that there's a "frame rate" or "aspect ratio" "mismatch" and it just doesn't do anything. The dialogue box has a blue like loading line, but it doesn't finish and it just closes. Comes up with a yellow colored warning icon in the events panel if that means something different to the red icon haha.

when you say H.264 cannot be consolidated what do you mean by that? If the original footage is H.264 (.mp4) it can't be consolidated no matter what? If I'm understanding correctly then that's the issue bc I work almost exclusively with h.264 footage and exports lol
