Consolidating a Short Sequence - Creates Hundreds of Proxy Files.

I'm consolidating a 15-second sequence which holds about 20 shots. The consolidation should only be a couple of gigs - but for some reason I end up with like 300 proxy clips totaling 100 gigs. Yes, I can manually delete them ... but what am I doing wrong? How do I consolidate without creating all of those proxies?
