Convert 25fps to 24fps for live music performance

I've got a live music performance shot at 25fps that I need to convert to a 24fps timeline. But I'm not permitted to alter the speed of the music to synch with it.

Does anyone know the correct way to do this in order to retain the same duration - and synch with existing sound - but avoid stutters from dropping frames?

I've been searching for a solution for a while but have so far failed to find an answer.

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

Is the source footage i25 or p25?

Edit the music video at it's camera original 25 fps frame rate in a 25 fps Timeline and export the edited version at 25 fps.  Then, remaster edited the version to 24 fps.  Make sure you're using an intermediate (or "mezzanine") CODEC.

As far as retaining the same duration for the source footage goes, that's problematic as the footage was recorded with the smallest unit of time being 1/25th of a second (1/50th if it's internlaced) and 1/24th is, simply put, a different amount.

You could use Clip > Modify > Interpret Footage > Frame Rate > Assume this frame rate: 24.0 for all of the 25 fps footage and edit that in a 24 fps Timeline; however, I'd see this as being effective only for MOS footage (no sync sound).

Actually for some odd reason seem to get better results dragging it into a 24p timeline in Resolve - instead of Premiere - and using the Optical Flow in there. Which feels strange, but seems to look better. 🙂

What happens if you just drop the 25 fps into the 24 timeline? It should playback in real time but will drop a frame every second. Optical flow might help the pictures look better.

Hi Richard,

I haven't looked into using optical flow yet. I'll do some research into that now.

Thanks for your help with this!

That question could possibly have been clearer.
Essentially I just need to synch 25fps picture to match existing sound in a 24fps timeline without altering the speed or duration of sound. 🙂

Why do you edit it in a 24 fps timeline?

Hi. Because it's a feature documentary project at 24fps. The majority of footage is at 24fps, just this wasn't. Which wouldn't be such an issue if it wasn't music - and as it's a recognisable track it can't be slowed down.
