Question

Creating clips out of long imported video

My second week in Premiere Pro, and I've watched the tutorials, but can't figure out how to take a five minute video I imported and make individual clips of it. I see the razor tool; is that what I use in the timeline to cut the clips? Can I then put them in the Project area?

My other question: what is the difference between a sequence and a clip? I'm just basically moving clips over to the timeline. What is the value of creating a sequence?

Thanks for any help!

Sure, you can place the entire Clip in a Timeline (a.k.a. Sequence), add edits with the Razor Tool and then Ripple Delete the unwanted segments so that you are only left with the segments that you want in your assembly.

You could also open the Clip in the Source panel, place an In Mark and an Out Mark and then use Insert to add that range to the Target Track.  Repeat until you have the ranges that you want to work with in your assembly.

If you'd like the segments to behave as if they were their own Clip to begin with, you can create Subclips while working in the Source panel.

Create soft subclips with flexible edit points

The Sequence is where you assemble your picture, sound and graphics.  If you were to compare it to writing a paper, the Sequence is the document and the Clips are the words.

Thanks, Warren!

I actually used the in and out markers in the Project panel to create subclips. I found examples of how to do that in the Premiere Manual ( I know, who ever looks at the manuals anymore?).  And the video you sent has been super helpful. I'm getting the hang of it!  Thanks agaim MaryanneM.
