Creating Subtitles / Closed Captions in Premiere?

Hi there,

I need to create Closed Captions for my film (as per requirements for some VOD websites); my budget is low so I want to do as much as I can myself for the project as possible. I am wondering if it is advisable to do it myself in Premiere?

The film will also be released on Blu-ray and DVD. If I create a closed caption or subtitles file in Premiere, is it possible to use this same file for the various formats? Or do they have to be done from scratch?

    You can use an external service like http://www.rev.com/.

    I personally don't have the budget, so I use a workaround: I use Google Doc or Microsoft Word to transcribe the audio from a clip, save the finished document and upload it with the my video privately/unpublished to YouTube, then finesse the transcription and download the final version as .srt (and other file formats when needed).

    +1 on rev.com. I use them often and it's only $1 per minute. You will still have to go thru and correct any mistakes they make but it's much faster than transcribing it yourself. I then upload the transcript to the video on YouTube to create my .srt file. I will import the .srt file into PP for captioning. Also be aware that special characters used in some languages (like Sp) as well as apostrophes are not displayed properly in PP captions (they show up as multiple asterisks). You can use this site to convert an .srt file into a UTF-8 version that will work - https://subtitletools.com/convert-text-files-to-utf8-online

    I don't think that from scratch, but when you send a video to export and in the Export Settings window you change the export format the Caption adapts to that new format, whether you burn them in the video or if you export them separately as an .srt file for example
