creation date in premiere pro not matching finder creation date macos

Hello! I have a project with 300+ clips shot over the course of a weekend I'd like to sort chronologically. Some of the files had incorrect creation dates embedded in their metadata, which I corrected using a metadata editor. In finder, these files have the correct creation date, however when I import them into premiere and try to sort them by date created, it is pulling the incorrect creation date from somewhere and using that to sort.

I'm on the newest version of premiere and macos catalina. Would appreciate any help as this project is pretty much at a standstill until this is resolved. Thanks in advance!

Hey, This is what worked for me. I've mostly tried everything else on the internet as well.

Step 1: Sort the clips as per creation time on your Finder or Windows Explorer.

Step 2: Import all sorted files as is to a new project. Give it time to create all peak files.

Step 3: Now what you have imported also gets lined up in Premiere Pro in the same order. Instead of sorting by creation date use the Modification date. Although the date will be the current date of import, your files will be sorted in the same order as your windows explorer or Mac finder. So when you import them into the timeline they will be in the same progression as the time of creation.

hmm, in this kind of situation, if the material is all shot on the same camera. I sort by file name which should be the same as chronoligical order or if I've set the timecode on the camera to be time of day (which I like to do for a number of reasons), I can just sort by starting timecode.

it was shot with multiple cameras, but most of them had the date & time in the filename so I was able to organize everything manually using that info, and i just kinda of guessed the rest. Not ideal and time consuming, but it worked lol.

Have you imported those files before changing the creation date?

Quick test, copy and rename one of the files and import into Premiere, see if it makes a difference.

Tried creating an entirely new project and doing what you suggested and it still is listing the incorrect creation date, unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestion!

Is it possible that Premiere is reading the metadata from some external file (xml or smthg) and not from the file itself?

how are you importing the files? people have said that using the media browser is the best way to import files and preserve metadata. I haven't seen any difference but worth a shot.
