Decoding Video in Premiere Pro

Im debating to add a second GPU to my computer system to help process files for encoding and decoding 8K video files. I currently have a RTX 5070 GPU. Im thinking of adding a new Intel Arc B70 GPU for a second card. Now AI responses suggested to select the Intel card for decoding, and use the Nvidia card for encoding.

Is it possible to select both cards for both encoding and decoding, to share the workload, being they are different brands of GPUs? I see under “Preferences- Media” that for decoding, it selected both my AMD on chip GPU as well as my Nvidia card. Could I technically add the Intel and get all 3 branded GPUs to decode my videos? Or would it be better to select only one device for decoding (like the Intel B70?) I see for encoding it does not allow a selected device for that. Not sure how that works with different GPUs installed. Or does it share the workload with all GPUs for encoding?

Adobe selects the GPU based on priority. It cannot actually utilize multiple decoders simultaneously no matter what. The priority is solely determined by whether your footage is in H.264 or in HEVC. For H.264, it’s always Nvidia first, then AMD, and finally Intel, while for HEVC it’s Intel first, then Nvidia, and finally AMD. The switchover occurs when the previous prioritized GPU decoder is depleted or doesn’t support the footage in question. So, if your footage is 10-bit 4:2:2 H.264, only your 5070 will hardware-decode that footage (neither Intel nor AMD supports H.264 outside of 8-bit 4:2:0).

Premiere has never worked well with multiple full GPU cards in a computer. Especially if they were a) different or b) in SLI config. So I’m not sure that adding an Arc to a 5070Ti would even get used. And we certainly don’t have a way to tell Premiere how to use the cards in the program.

Actually you can choose which gpu for decoding in Premiere Pro. Edit- Preferences- Media. Select from there. Same with encoding. So you can choose a gpu.

Unchecking a decoder only eliminates that decoder from the priority list, meaning it will not be used at all for that encoding job.
