difference mate not working

A copied video from layer 1 do layer 2 and on layer 1 put difference mate. Then set difference layer to layer 2. So there should be no difference so final output should be transparent that is black. However I receive no change the picture is as it was before, as if I did not use difference mate.

    Oh, it is simple. You were correct to a degree.

    Background Mask we put on layer two, the person (with  the same background as on layer two) we put on layer three. On layer three we put differential matte and set its property difference layer to layer 2 (video 2). Then (!!) we set "toggle track output" of video 2 to "off". Now final output shows only the person and the background is transparent. Now we can put a video background on layer 1, replacing our old background.

    And that way we do not have to use green or blue background to be removed. We can use any background. Only we need to remember that the background should be still.

    I've never actually done this, but I thought the proper procedure was to place the effect on the clip above, not the clip below.

    NLEs typically look down, not up.
