Disappointed with Adobe Premiere Pro processing HDR Footage from my phone

After more than 10 years of subscription, I am extremely disappointed in Adobe Premiere Pro's processing of HDR footage from a Xiaomi FlipPhone.  I accidentally recorded my child for a school project in HDR Video Mode, and when I Imported it into the timeline, the footage kept on stuttering.  It took me around an hour just to find a supposed solution, but in the end it all didn't work.   My wife suggested I try CapCut, and as I put the clip into the timeline, CapCut immediately informs me that it will convert the HDR to SDR.  In less than a minute, I was recreating my edit in Premiere Pro.  Why are we paying for a subscription if Premiere Pro can't automatically suggest a conversion from HDR to SDR? 

I tried Interpeting the footaged, I tried converting the color space of the footage, the color space of the sequence, nothing worked, it kept on stutttering.  I tried converting it via Adobe Media Encoder, and the stuttering persisted in the converted footage.  I've been a loyal paying customer and this is so dissapointing!

There are two different issues here. Neil covered the color correction items. But the stuttering is different, I didn't see you mention your hardware/os/PP version, etc. Plus is type of footage and is it variable frame rate? Some information on those things could give us a clue as what to suggest.

 

When you used media encoder, to what format did you make it?

Premiere has extensive color management options, but with that ability comes more complexity. And several things need to be set together to get the image needed at any one time.

 

Use the full color management panel, which is in the Lumetri panel's Settings Tab, the tab named  settings. NOT the partial options spread out throughout the app.

 

There you can set the entire chain for what you need, though it's long and a bit confusing at first. I'd suggest starting with setting auto detect log and auto tonemapping to on, set the Sequence space to Rec. 709, and see if that fixes things. It does set most HLG/HDR forms correctly.

 

If not, post back, and drag/drop a screen grab of the entire CM Settings panel into the text reply area, and we can get you sorted.
