Question

[Documentary] [subtitles] Subtitle (captions) on clip level, NOT on sequence level?

Hi all,

A specific question that I've been googling, but finding no good answer for.

The question: is there a way to create and link subtitles to CLIPS, which can be turned on or off at will and which will follow the clip throughout the project?

The situation: I'm working on a documentary film in a foreign language. I speak this language, but:

1 My editor does not.

2 My audience does not.

I'm currently preparing the material for the editor to start editing with. So, for the benefit of the editing process, I would like to integrate subtitles on clip level (rather than captions on sequence level), so that whenever a clip is used in any sequence a simple click can make the subtitles appear in the sequence program viewer.

Is this possible?

If so, it would have two huge benefits:

1 It helps the editor understand the material, without having to look at paper or markers.

2 The same would hold for exporting (work in progress) sequences to be viewed by others. If subtitles could be held at clip level, a click of the button would show all subtitles for all clip (fragments) used throughout the sequence. In the export, the subtitles could then be burned in or exported as stand-alone subtitle file. This would be a huge timesaver, because whenever I do a new WIP edit of my material I have to subtitle everything again on sequence level.

I'm guessing the answer lies somewhere in using (open or closed) captions, but I have yet to crack the puzzle.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I see no way for this to work.

Two things to try:

1) Create a sequence with the clip and a caption stream, then nest that sequence instead of using the clip. But I think this will lead to headaches.

2) Explorer using scripting in After Effects and see if a dynamic linked option would allow you to turn the "captions" on and off.

Hi Stan,

Thanks for giving this some thought. Option 2 sounds like an interesting path. I'll be looking more into it, but for now: would you have more technical pointers how such a solution might possibly work?

Thanks,

Jeroen
