Does anyone know how this trail effect was made and how i could replicate it?

In this Premier League intro it has this super unique effect that trails the player's movements and I cannot figure out how it was done. If anyone has any ideas then i would love to hear them

Red Giant Universe "Trapcode" suite includes a widely used particle effect, Particular. Check that out, there are others of course.

    Those are "particle" effects, typically done in AfterEffects. There's some "native" ability to do that in AE, but most of what I've seen have been built using one of the several plugins that are designed particular for that work.
