Question

DPP Metadata Premiere Pro

Hi,  I'm wondering if someone can answer my questions regarding DPP metadata in Premiere Pro.

As it stands, I'm currently creating content for major broadcasters using the DPP metadata app, but I'm wondering if it's possible to create a final AS-11 DPP spec file purely from Premiere Pro alone. I've read through quite a few posts and watched various videos on the metalogging side of the things in Premiere pro, but I've not yet come across anyone else who answers this question directly.

So far I have tried logging all the information required to attach to the video file, but I can't seem to enter things such as the clock start times, the programme in/out times or part breaks which may be included. Every time I've attempted to do so, there seems to be a box which is greyed out in someway or another.

In an ideal world I would like to create an AS-11 file with UK DPP embedded metadata. No use of the DPP app needed.

Is this possible? If so could you please explain the workflow you are following to create this?

Thanks!

The metadata dialogue is confusing to say the least and it doesn't appear to "say what it means and do what it says'.

I can't comment on how/where/why mediainfo gets the metadata from; nevertheless, the DPP metadata app is the place to check and if you enter the Metadata in Premiere and export using default settings, this metadata appears when you open the resulting mxf in the DPP app. You also get an xmp when you export the file but I always just delete this straight away - its not required.

Hi There

It's comforting knowing someone managed to make it work, Last year I spent hours trying with no results and ended up using Avid which is pretty straight forward. I shall give PP another try and report back.

Hey mate, don't know if the situation was different back when you posted this but I just did a little testing on my version of Premiere 2018 (12.1.2).

I found that I was indeed able to enter all the data I needed to enter for AS-11 metadata. In fact I was testing how one would do this using Premiere, and thought one HAD to use the DPP Metadata app to achieve because it just never occurred to me to press that metadata button on the export window. (Facepalm)

So I clicked 'new' in the export template for output file metada and there is a whole bunch of drop down categories of different metadata standards in to which one can enter data and I found AS-11 Core, AS-11 UK DPP, and AS-11 Structural. In fact at least in my case I needed to enter data in to all 3. There were no fields in any category that were disabled for me, all were editable and curiously all of them had the option to tick to include or untick to exclude which is odd because many f those that could be excluded were marked with an asterick denoting they were required fields. I went through the full compliment of metadata without a hitch.

t was almost a success story until I discovered there was no way for me to enable the metadata to be embedded rather than included as a sidecar file. The requriements for my broadcaster are that the data be embedded. As far as I can tell it's because Premiere's metadata options are 'powered by XMP' which is a technology developed by Adobe and which allows embedding of metadata only in a select list of file formats of which MXF is not one. As I understand it, the AS-11 standard mandates MXF Op1a file formats for delivery so depending on how common it is that the broadcaster insist upon embedded metadata that could more or less make the entire exercise completely useless as one has to use the DPP metadata app to author a new file with metadata embedded anyway and also because the sidecar file adobe generates is .XMP format, not XML making it impossible to even import the data itself in to the app if you wanted to at least save having to re-enter the data.

So this experience was kind of a ride. At first I assumed it couldn't be done because I just didn't know where on Premiere's UI one would find the option, then I read your post and realised it was obvious where and found out you COULD do it all, then I discovered a caveat that for me at least makes it as good as useless. So yeh, XMP, not so great, maybe it's ok if the broadcaster you send to accepts them. I'm only just having to contend with any of this at all because up until recently here in my country, no broadcaster has ever required the entry of any kind of metadata let alone specific standards of metadata that I'm just discovering exist so perhaps XMP sidecar files are common and not a big deal, but personally I'd prefer XML since the DPP metadata app uses that and so does Avid, so one could at least make useful templates.

Yes it is possible, we do it all the time and delivery to all the major UK broadcasters: BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, Sky etc.

You need to use segmentation spanned markers for part durations.

Using the Metadata button you can fill in the required metadata and this will embed in the AS-11 MXF (even though the Export Options says 'Create sidecar file'.)

Hey Mike,

That's reassuring news. All my broadcast work has been through Avid but one day I'm sure I'll have to package up something from Premiere for broadcast delivery eventually so it's good to know how ahead of time. I'll take your word for it that the metadata is indeed being embedded but it does leave me with some questions like:

  1. Why does it specifically grey-out and disallow the UI option to select embedding and specifically allow only the creation of a sidecar which by virtue of being selectable when embedding isn't, implies strongly that each is mutually exclusive? This question is directed at Adobe, but just putting it here in context.
  2. Why, when going through Adobe's own documentation about their XMP standard does it not list MXF as a supported file format for embedding
  3. If Premiere does embed the metadata anyway even though it says it doesn't, why, when using the 'mediainfo' app on an MXF with embedded metadata created using the DPP metadata app, is all the embedded metadata viewable and readable exactly as it was entered, but when doing the same with an MXF created by Premiere with the metadata exported as a sidecar (because it was the only selectable option), it is not?
  4. How did you discover that the metadata was actually embedded after all when Premiere makes it look like it won't do it? Are there any other good ways to read AS-11 metadata to verify things other than the mediainfo app?

Cheers

Hi William,

Any update on this? I also have the same issue - specifically with regards to separating the programme duration run time from the 5 second safety hold at the end. I believe the use of spanned markers (extended markers) in Avid are automatically detected in the DPP app, but having tried tried that in Premiere I've had no luck.

Best of l luck finding a solution.
