Dragging an item from Explorer into Premiere causing PC to fully restart

This is a weird one, but basically if I drag and drop an item from explorer to premiere timeline, it causes my PC to freeze up completely and restart.  Every time.  First time this has been an issue over 15 years.  LOL please help with any thoughts!!!!  Ahhhh may even just be time for a windows re-install but I'm rocking a 3090, 5900x, 64gb ddr4 3600mhz ram, so hardware shouldn't be any issue

this is common if your files are on the same drive as the cache folder

does it crash if importing from premiere project into the timeline?

if its just drag, it could be a corrupt OLE in your registry or the file path is too long or strange characters. try a c:\videos\video.avi to see if its a filepath or permissions issue.

No, it doesn't crash in any way except for drag and drop into the timeline from explorer.  I'll try this, as the names are really long, but also was never an issue in the past with the same names.  Thanks for the advice

Just a bit of cautionary note ... dragging from Finder/Explorer is not always the most reliable way to get media into Premiere, especially to get all the metadata from the file properly ensconced in the various locations Premiere stores things. And that's dragging to the Project panel ... dragging to the timeline panel is even less reliable.

So while it's done a lot, it's not really a recommended nor safe working practice. Right-click/Import into the bin in the Project panel is 'safer' and more reliable, as is using the MediaBrowser panel instead of the Finder/Explorer from the OS. Especially if you've got Favorites set in the MediaBrowser.

Thank you!  Going to try these suggestions now.  Also just for your info, it is ONLY freezing when dropping it into the timeline, not project panel

Delete the Media Cache and Media Cache files:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro/faq-how-to-clear-your-media-cache-in-30-seconds-in-premiere-pro-2020/m-p/11017257/thread-id/260446?page=1

If that doesn't work, try resetting the preferences:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro/faq-how-to-reset-trash-preferences-in-premiere-pro/td-p/8236158?page=1

If that doesn't work, try resetting the Workspaces:
Reset a workspace
Reset the current workspace to return to its original, saved layout of panels.
1. Do one of the following:
• Click the Workspace menu icon and select Reset to Saved Layout.
• Choose Window > Workspace > Reset to Saved Layout.
from here:
https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/workspaces.html

If that doesn't work, try Preferences > Audio Hardware and set Input to None.

If that doesn’t work, try updating or rolling back your graphics driver directly from the video card manufacturer’s site. If NVIDIA, do a clean installation of the latest Studio Driver (NOT the Game Driver)

If that doesn't work, try creating a new project and import the old one into it.
