Question

Dragging to trim a clip hides all layers above and below it

I was in the middle of editing one of my videos when the program window started to display only the layer being trimmed within the timeline, it also displays a black screen when moving a clip in the timeline (but it still displays the beginning and end of the clips that I move into it). However the program window still displays all layers normally when paused and played. Originally my preferred program window would only show the frame the play head was on and not show me any previews for trimming or moving videos.

This is happening between projects so I believe I had accidentally hit a bind I am unaware of and changed how the program window displays my timeline or misclicked a setting and set it as such.

I have tried reinstalling Premier pro, changed workspaces, and clearing the preferences but to no avail.

(I apologize if this is a stupid question but I don't have enough experience with premiere pro to know exactly what I am doing incorrectly or posses the knowhow to easily find the solution the the problem myself, if it is a technical problem or a user problem)

I appreciate @Astonished_motivation5639 nicely written post, but there are a couple of things I would note.

1) I don't see that option available.

2) I recommend you leave High Quality playback checked (and both Playback and Paused at Full)

I doubt the transport controls do anything for this issue except give you a slightly larger monitor space.

3) Switch back to Mercury Playback CUDA - if you have an nvidia card

Cheers 🙂

Maybe you've been using Trim mode or Trim Edit, <Shift+T> by default.

I tried it on 2017 also, and it does the same.

Giving it another good look, I say its normal behavior.

It only shows the track on which the clip is sliding/trimmed.

while sliding it will give the last frame of the clip on the left or first frame of the clip on the right.

If there is no clip on either side of the sliding clip it would show as black.

If the top and below clips where showing you would not see what you were trimming.

Can you show me the way to disable this intended feature?

My previous preference has this disabled and I am unsure how to turn It off again.

Its by design and has been for a very long time.  Tested this in 2023 to be sure. Cannot turn it on or off.

I am guessing you are confusing two different behaviors within Premiere.
Might be you seeing other tracks with Composite Preview during Trim turned on.

Hey @defaultgzkxy7o55slh

Hope you are doing fine!

Well that's not a stupid question at all - you're likely dealing with a setting that was accidentally changed. Based on your description, it sounds like "Trimmed Layer Preview" or "Live Preview During Trim" is enabled. Try one of these solutions:

1) Disable Trim / Drag Preview

- Edit > Preferences > Timeline

- Uncheck "Show preview during trimming"

2) Toggle Program Monitor Settings

- Check the wrench icon in the Program Monitor

- Disable "High Quality Playback" and "Show Transport Controls"

- Ensure "Composite Video" is selected instead of "Alpha"

3) Check GPU Acceleration

- File > Project Settings > General

- Switch Renderrer to Mercury Playback Engine Software only

4) Reset Workspace and Preferences

- Window > Workspaces > Reset to saved layout

- Hold Alt (Windows) / Option (Mic) while launching Premier to reset preferences.

This should fix the issue.

1) Disable Trim / Drag Preview

I don't seam have any setting that mentions trim previews

2) Toggle Program Monitor Settings

My monitor settings already have high quality playback disabled and composite video selected

3) Check GPU Acceleration

Switching the renderer to mercury playback engine didn't seam to change anything

4) Reset Workspace and Preferences

I have reset the preferences with also no change

You can change this behavior by adjusting a setting in the Timeline:

  • Click the Timeline Display Settings (wrench icon) in the Timeline.
  • Check Composite Preview During Trim.

With this option enabled, Premiere Pro will display frames before and after the trim point for all tracks, instead of only showing the frame after the trim point for the trimmed track.

However, when dragging a clip in the Timeline, the Program Monitor only displays frames from that specific track. If no frames exist on either side, the monitor will appear black.

I understand that enabling the composite preview during trim would display all layers beginning and ends of trim points as well as the fact that dragging clips displays the beginnings and endings of tracks of the layer i'm am dragging it into, however my previous preferred settings would have the program monitor not display the beginning and ends of dragged clips, it would simply show a composite preview of the frame the playhead is on with all layers still being visible. As well as trimming (by dragging the sides of clips) would only show one preview window of the side of the clip I was trimming. Is there any way I can go back to this?

Delete the Media Cache and Media Cache files:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro/faq-how-to-clear-your-media-cache-in-30-seconds-in-premiere-pro-2020/m-p/11017257/thread-id/260446?page=1

If that doesn’t work, try updating or rolling back your graphics driver directly from the video card manufacturer’s site. If NVIDIA, do a clean installation of the latest Studio Driver (NOT the Game Driver).

If that doesn't work, try creating a new project and import the old one into it.

I have tried deleting the media cache and media cache files following the link but to no avail. Installing the the studio driver also did not solve the issue I am having. My problem still occurs over all projects I have, Including new ones.

I am still uncertain whether or not my problem comes from a system error or a feature of premier pro that I am unaware of.
