DV Capture Is capturing at 23.976 fps instead of 29.97fps. How do I fix it?

I have a miniDV tape from a client to capture.  The tape is definitely 29.97fps.  Whatever settings (and there are not many) I try (in PP 2018), the result is 23.976, verified by looking at it in Quicktime.

I have looked at Project Settings and Capture Settings.

I do NOT wan to modify/interpret footage.  I just want it to capture all of the frames in every second.

Help would be much appreciated. -Terry

I just remembered.. I'm pretty sure I used cineform as the codec to capture to... what are you using ?

Do you really trust quicktime to tell you what you have ? what does PPro tell you about the source (captured) material ?? Or mediainfo or VLC or other stuff ??

Premiere tells me it is 23.976 too.  I used QT to verify. I trust it. VLC would say the same.

Ten years ago, 90% of what I would capture was DV tape, so I am pretty aware of all the ins and outs.

Yes, it is realtime capture.

There is just some damn setting where I must have told it to make it 24p, but I cannot find it anywhere now...

I also installed a Black Magic Intensity Pro Capture card a couple weeks ago for this same client to capture some other old footage.

No, I am not trying to use the BM capture settings, there is a separate set for "DV"

I just solved (?) my problem by re-installing FCP7, which I hadn't used in a long time.

It captured it perfectly at 29.97

So, I guess I have a workaround, but it bugs me.

Thanks for your time and suggestions.

I appreciate it.

P.S.

None of what I said matters re: tech stuff. The video person who traveled (hired) to shoot the safari shot with whatever camera he had. I had to email him and get answers about frame rate ( 30 or 29.97) and WB and some other stuff... and he gave me info. Technically I knew how to set up the project once I got the tape digitized. The elec generators in the 'camp headquarters' ( not the on the bush camps but the main business place that provided guides, permits, park people, etc. … the MAIN OFFICE) ran on some stupid Hz, that made the video strobe. That was messed up. Basically useless footage.

Just do what you have to do to get stuff done.

There are tons of really smart people around here who might help you... but to be honest most of the time it boils down to 'what benefits ME ' as a contributing ACP or STAFF or Expert etc.  You haven't given details about your stuff ( player, connection, computer, etc. ) and nobody can just GUESS what's up.

If the videographer was shooting with a Panasonic AG-DVX100, 100A, or 100B, while in 24p mode or 24p Advanced mode, then yes, the captured DV tape will result in a 23.976 clip.  Camcorders like this were capable of performing 3:2 pulldown internally, recording 24 fps to tape at 29.97.  We always want to remove 3:2 pulldown before editing and the best time to do so is during capture.

The AG-DVX100 wasn't the only camcorder that could record 24p to tape at 29.97 with 3:2 pulldown, but it's probably best known for it.  In video production at the time, it was a game changer just like FireWire, MiniDV, and DVCAM before it.

Terysim,

hehe.. yeah, that was a long time ago (capture from tape) I did. I don't like thinking about the product much, cause it was a safari where some guy with a lot of money to go kill an elephant in Africa was excited about his prowess as a open sight hunter, with guide, park service people with him, all that stuff...

For me the trick was to get it to point where 'maybe' it could go to some hunter cable station but at the time they were transitioning (cable people) to HD, and with lots of rules ( can't show animal actually getting shot, etc. ).

I am not into hunting for sport and I wasn't getting paid to do the edit... as I actually ASKED to do it so I could learn how to use CS4 or CS6 or whatever it was...plus the capture process.

I did get a free fruitcake gift from guy's wife ( which was really nice).

If I had to do it again I would use what I have now... BM decklink SDI IN from some fancy DV player that client would have to supply me with...  I'll never put out money again to do stuff for free or even for PAY without charging client for stuff needed.

I'm 68 and retired grip, so I am NOT a pro editor and don't want to be.

I know it's annoying to jump through hoops to get stuff done you want to DO... but it is what it is. This really boils down to YOU doing what you are currently doing.. reaching out for help and info.  Good luck !

I sincerely hope you don't have to edit killing of elephants. The next thing I got to do had to do with killing whales... if you can believe it..

I was becoming known for 'the free idiot who can edit killing nice animals'....

Yuck !

I'm really glad you solved it ( in the sense that it gets DONE right ). That's more important than barking up the tree about what isn't working... it's what DOES work that matters.

Good going !

Thanks Rodney,

I'm still hoping someone with a lot of experience (that they can remember) can chime in and let me know where the settings are that are killing me here.  I love working in a single program.

Sorry, I am on a MAC.

Premiere always used to work.

Before that I used FCP.

I only did a capture like that once a real long time ago. If I remember right I had to ….

use a fancy little mini DV player so I could put the tape in it and play the tape.

Do you have a fancy player ? What kind is it ??  Sony model number XXX ??

I had a PC and had to buy some kind of card to install a firewire PORT so I could connect the fancy player to the computer.

Do you use some kind of connection from your player to the computer ?  I wonder what kind it is ???

Then, since in those days CS4 and CS6 sucked at capturing stuff, I used a different program to do it...( forget name of program ).

In the end I captured about 10 tapes and it all worked out OK, but took a long time... cause it captured at real time... like, you play it at normal speed and it captured at that speed …  Was time consuming.

Are you capturing stuff at real time speed or are you trying to speed it up a little bit ???

good luck
