Question

Dynamics Processing not working properly

Like many others, I am extremely frustrated by Adobe making Dynamics an obsolete effect. Not only is it very irritating to have warning dialogues pop up every single time I open a project where it's been applied, but I know it's also going to disappear for good one day.

I have what should be a very, very simple need: an audio limiter of -6 dB. I edit TV shows and news segments for community/access TV. Some are 3 - 5 min long, some are 22 - 30. Using Multiband Compressor and Dynamics to boost audio and prevent peaking literally saves me hours of work every week. Adobe suggests using Multi. Comp. or the new Dynamics Processing instead to function as a limiter. Multi. Comp.'s limiter caps at -5 for some reason, so I'm trying to make Dynamics Proc. work and it almost does...almost.

It should be straight forward. I start at default, there are 3 points on the graph. Input gain is the quietest your audio can get, output gain is the loudest. It should literally be as simple as setting output gain to -6, but it doesn't work. You have to keep pulling it down below -6 to get it to finally peak under. I can't trust that kind of imprecision, I have no idea what the actual audio peaking limit is this way. Make-Up Gain and Input/Output Gain in the settings tab are all set to 0 dB as well, so nothing's boosting the signal here.

Looking to see if anyone has a solution to this mess? Another effect that works? Settings with Dynamics Proc. that work properly? And please note that normalizing the master track is not an appropriate fix. I don't want to have to reduce all my audio evenly to come in at -6, and I don't want to waste extra time and space rendering out my track and going to Audition. I just want a simple friggin' audio limiter, without annoying popup windows reminding me it's going to be gone forever one day soon. Maddening.

I understand the want, but often we don't get what we want, and have to deal with what we have to get the job done.

In this case, Audition might be the best option.
