Editing audio track not clip

Hi all,

I usually edit the volume of a music track by cutting the clip into sections, adding transitions and adjusting each clip volume to the level I want. 
Although I'd like to edit the track volume, not the clip volume, so if I change the clip I don't have to redo all the job again. Is there any good and easy way to do that other than using the pen tool? I find it very limited...
