Editing text in a template that is already set up CC 2019

I am unable to edit text in my template that I work in. What I believe should be my "text tool" in the editing panel to the left of my timeline says "type tool" so whenever I click on the text to edit it I'm only getting a new text box. Maybe these terms are interchangeable I don't know, but I don't need new text I just need to be able to click the text that is already in my template and edit it. I was able to click on the text and edit it yesterday with no issues and I haven't changed any settings or done anything differently to my knowledge. If anyone has had this problem or just has any ideas on how to edit text that is already laid down but just needs to be changed around a little please let me know. Thanks!

Make sure you're selecting the graphic in your sequence first, otherwise Premiere will tend to default to creating a new graphic (with a new text box) if you use the Type Tool with no graphic pre-selected.

If you want to be 100% precise, open up the Essential Graphics panel, select the graphic in question in your sequence, and then you can select the specific layer you want to modify and go from there.
