Error Retrieving Frame

Hello, I am currently working on editing a video to upload to youtube. Basically they are gaming videos that I record with OBS. They are mp4's, I have already worked with and uploaded 2 other videos and I never had any issues with those. These clips I am working with are usually 2-3 hours long and whenever I am editing I have around maybe 7 or more of these long video clips. I just started working on another video and I have been working on it for like an hour and everything is going smooth until I start getting the "Error retrieving frame" and can't play the video it just goes black. I have no idea why. I have tried various things that others have suggested but no resolution. I looked under the file properties and it is variable frame rate, not sure if that has anything to do with that but thought I'd say it anyways.

 

These are my specs for reference - RTX 2070

Intel i7-8700k , 32gb ram

Hello @Joshua31118620c2hn,

If the files are from OBS, they might have a variable frame rate. That's OK for shorter clips, but long clips might need to be transcoded back to H.264 or to something like ProRes LT (better, but larger file size). Most people with that footage use Shutter Encoder to do that. Try it out.

Thank you so much for responding, so I transcoded the file and out of the 2 hours and 50 something minutes of that clip only 1 hour and 41 minutes were transcoded as handbrake gave me an error. Those 1 hour 41 minutes of video play perfectly fine, I believe the rest of the clip is just corrupted or something which is why I was able to work with the first half of the clip when working on the project. I also tried working with some other clips from the same game and they work fine, it's just this specific clip. So I guess my question now would be, do you know of any programs or ways to possibly save or recover this corrupted file? If not I understand and thank you so much.

Hello @Joshua31118620c2hn,

Give Shutter Encoder a try. It has way more features than Handbrake. I don't use Handbrake anymore. If H.264 isn't working, try an editing codec. I hope the advice helps.
