every single action I take in premier pro causes the spinning wheel for 50 seconds

I'm editing a film on a mac, I was just about to export it when suddenly today, after months of editing, premier pro has slowed to such a degree that editing is impossible. I've emptied the cache. it had no effect. It's also not saving. please help me ASAP as It's due tomorrow

a gray box that becomes the duration code for my footage appears on my screen on whatever window i'm using, I'm also noticing everything on the mac starting to slow to a crawl

Im not a MAC user but where are your footage stored? This suddenly appearance and the fact that everything on your machine slows down look like a hardware failure to me. Is the drive okay? I had a bad drive decades ago and I had to wait very long for everything. The drive wanted to access something and needs more than one try to get the data.
