"Export to SRT file" error: on every line!!!!

For a while now, I've been having an issue exporting captions. For some reason, "" would appear before and after each and every line in the SRT file. Of course, this created an issue when trying to post the file on YouTube.

I JUST discovered the cause for the error. In addition to selecting "Bold" as the Font Style, I had selected "Faux Bold". (Just to the left of the "Faux Italic" button.) So, be VERY careful when selecting the style or else your exported SRT file will be useless!

By the way, the font I was using was Arial Rounded MT Pro. I don't know whether this issue appears with all fonts.

It was not really an error. The way SRT files pass formatting is via html tag pairs like bold - '. When you export this from PR "with styling," it includes the tags ( ). And if you export SRT from the Text Panel/Captions tab using the 3 dots export, it gives you no choice, it includes styling.

My answer here in 2022 was incomplete: the PR 2022 release had already added back the option (missing in the new workflow in PR 2021) to export a sidecar by selecting a Sequence with captions in the Project Panel or Timeline and File -> Export -> Captions. There you could deselect styling, and export just the sidecar without exporting video and/or audio.

Hi, Ishan,

Sorry – I should've known to include the version!! I'm running 22.6.2 on the Mac, however, I know the issue has persisted through several versions. And it looks as though the problem occurs with ALL fonts. It only appears in the exported file and not in the tool itself.

I only experience the issue when I select "Export to SRT file..." from the ellipses pulldown menu. The problem DOESN'T seem to occur if "Export Media" is selected. (Thanks, Stan!) But is there a way to export an SRT without exporting video and/or audio as well?

I imagine this issue isn't encountered very often because most people wouldn't want "Faux Bold" selected as well as "Bold". I was just trying to keep the captions small and as legibile as possible. 🙂

I think it is a mistake, but it has not changed since the new caption workflow came out. So no, you cannot export srt without styling and not export either video or audio.

Yes, just be sure you have no "styling" set in the file.

Or export the srt via the "Export Media" screen, select sidecar, srt, and DESELECT include styling.

The bold (or other) tags won't be included.

Welcome to the community, and sorry about the issue. Which version of Premiere Pro are you currently using? Could you check if this is only the issue with the font you specified or all fonts? Do you see the "" prefix while previewing as well? Let us know. We're here to help.
