Question

Exporting a multichannel video file with no sequential channels?

I received specs for delivery intended for broadcast. But, I'm having a difficult time wrapping my head around the Audio section where it says "Chan 1 Left, Chan 2 Right etc. The problem is, I'm unable to create 4 channels total routed to channels 1,2, 7 and 8. It appears so far that I have to create 3-6 as well in order to achieve this and have access to 7-8. But, the directions require me to deliver a file with only 4 channels of audio content routed to 1,2,7,8.

What I discovered is that I can create the 8 tracks, route the channels accordingly and then delete 3,4,5,6 and still have 2 tracks left routed to 7 and 8.

When I render though, the tracks 7 and 8 are silent, with no waveforms when I import it into a sequence to check the file.

Any suggestions?

Codecs, container and data rates:

  1. Format: MXF or DNxHD

Format profile: OP1a

Timecode track:

Drop frame time code starting at 00;00;00;00 hour at beginning of program. Continuous and advancing until the end of file. Video time code must match the sidecar caption file time code. Timecode must be in header of medial file and have an MXF timecode track

AFD flag:

16x9

Video:

High Definition:

XDCAM HD or DNxHD. 50mbps to 150Mb/s.

1920x1080 interlaced, 29.97 fps

Profile main@high,

4:2:0 MPEG-2 Long GOP

YUV color space

Video levels and color gamut as per ITU 709 standards

Field Order: Top Field First

Bid depth: 8 bits

Chroma 4:2:2

Audio:

Four channels

Uncompressed PCM audio.

Either 16 or 24 Bits depth.

48 KHz sampling rate.

Little Endian

Audio Channel Assignments:

Chan 1 Left Stereo

Chan 2 Right Stereo

Chan 7 Mono mix or DVI

Chan 8 Mono mix or SAP

Note that channels 7 and 8 must be populated with either DVS/SAP content or a monaural mix of channels 1 and 2. They cannot be silent. There must be four audio tracks at all times. Media without audio tracks cannot be accepted.

Audio levels:

Content dialog level should be at -24LKFS +/-2db as measured on a BS.1770-3 measuring set (see ATSC A/85 for further info). Maximum peaks must be limited to -2dbfs. Audio sync should be within +/- 1 frame of the video. If included, a reference calibration tone must be at -20dbfs.

Ancillary data:

For HD, SMPTE 436M CEA-708 captions with CEA-608 compatibility bytes must be included.

VANC: line 9 SMPTE 334 captions, Line 11 has AFD for HD.

Closed Captioning:

Media must have accompanying captioning either embedded in the media HANC or as a sidecar SCC caption file (preferred) with the same time code as the video track. The sidecar caption file must have the same name as the media file, and have no file permissions limitations. The caption file shall include an EDM (Erase Displayed Memory command), also known as a clear pulse, as the first frame matching video.

Right, that's what assumed too, that tracks 3-6 will be silent and tracks 7-8 can have mono content. But, when I export and then bring the MXF back into Premiere, there are no waveforms on tracks 7-8. Also, is it possible to have content just on track 7 as opposed to 7 and 8?

So, rethinking this, I should have 8 channels not 4 total, right?

The way I read it, tracks 3-6 will simply be silent.  They exist, but have no content.

You should confirm this, but I read the delivery instructions as:

    MXF or DNxHD

    8 Audio Channels

    Audio Channel Assignments:

    Chan 1 Left Stereo

    Chan 2 Right Stereo

Chan 7 Mono mix or DVI

Chan 8 Mono mix or SAP

Channels 1,2,7,8 must have audio as called for in the instructions or the program will be rejected.

But a quick confirmation by the program receiver would be good before proceeding.

Yes Meg, you're on the right track. Instead of selecting 4 multichannel tracks on export, I selected 8. Now tracks 7 and 8 have waveforms!

Found this as well: Exporting multiple audio channels from Premiere Pro CS6 in MXF OP1a
