Question

Extend Next/ Previous edit to play head

I'm a long-time avid editor looking trying to add Premiere to my repertoire and mostly I'm finding it an amazing tool... but having a few pretty big hangups.  One of the toughest, for me, is the "extend next / previous edit to playhead" functionality.  I'll try to explain in an example:

I have a timeline with clip A and clip B.  I want to, extend the tail of clip A until it completely replaces clip B.  I realize I can use the rolling edit tool and drag clip A right until I reach the end of clip B... but for me, this is clunky and slow.

In Avid, I would simply mark an out and hit extend and Clip A would roll until the outpoint.

I found the keyboard shortcut in Premiere "extend next edit to playhead".  WooHOoo, I thought.

It does work ok if I want clip A to write over clip B somewhere in the middle of the clip, but often I want to extend clip A until it completely replaces clip B

But here's where it goes wrong for me.

1) [using keyboard shortcuts] I mark in/out for clip B.  Then I "Go to out"

2) I hit extend previous edit to playhead.

... and clip A rolls over clip B... except for the last frame.  Nooooooooo.  It leaves that last frame there.

So, I tried instead of navigating the playhead to the outpoint of clip B, using "go to next edit" instead.

But now, "extend to next edit" will not engage at all.

Am I just out of luck and Premiere just doesn't work like this, or is there some sort of setting I need to adjust?

I'd be grateful for any ideas.  Thanks!

Exactly! One of the annoying premiere issues when coming from Avid utopia. Deleting video of clip b first or extending and then mark in mark out deleting the last frame of B, could be workarounds I guess. Any other ideas yet?

For the rest the all tracks off/on toggle in premiere is amazingly frustrating. With excalibur that works but reaction time is way slower.

The annoyance for me, of PP extend vs Avid extend, is that you have to select the edit to extend first. So I don’t use it anywhere near as much in PP.

But i think the way I get around your problem is to delete clip B before extending clip A
