external recorder audio plays fine but the video audio, which fine in source monitor, is muffled

My audio from the video clips plays fine in the source monitor but muffled when I bring it into the sequence to the point where I it sounds like listening to music through a wall mostly bass. my devices show my sony reciever. the sample rate says input 4800 and output 192000. So frustrating!
