FAQ: UPDATING to PrPro 2023: HOW TO!

As expected, the entire 2023 Adobe CC Cloud apps 'dropped' early this morning US Pacific time, the first day of Adobe MAX. They like giving a "present" to open to MAX attendees. Sweet of them!

There are good and not so good ways to upgrade to the new version. This post advises how to do the safest and most reliable upgrade process.

MAKE SURE THAT YOU UNCHECK "REMOVE PREVIOUS VERSIONS" IN THE UPDATE PROCESS! I do not recommend ever removing the previous versions. They may save your bacon some day!

If you have critical or large-project workflows, it may be wise to NOT simply open a 2022 or earlier project in the new version. Follow the listed steps below!

For small projects or non-critical workflows, duplicate the previous version project file before opening it in the new version.

If you are using Productions mode ... then simply 'open' the previous Production with the new major version of Premiere. It will automatically create a new Production folder, and do the migration by copying/redoing projects automatically for the entire Production.

  1. After installing 2023, do NOT open or create a project. First, find your Media Cache files. On Windows, go to the Preferences dialog box by choosing Edit > Preferences and then clicking on the Media Cache preference. On Mac, go to Preferences by choosing Premiere Pro > Preferences.
  2. In the Media Cache dialog, use the option to DELETE the cache files.
  3. Reboot Pr2023 if it does not automatically do so. Whether you are continuing a previous project or starting a new one, CREATE A NEW PROJECT! (If actually starting a new project, import/ingest your assets as before.)
  4. If continuing with a Pr2022 project, now go in the newly created 2023 project to the MediaBrowser panel. Navigate to the 2022 project, select it, and IMPORT/INGEST the contents of that project. This creates a new Pr2023 version of that project, keeping the old one untouched and usable in Pr2022 at need.

If you follow these steps, you will have a safer, smoother migration process to the new version.
