file importer issue xmp and metadata

I’ve looked in every forum possible and i have never had issues importing .avi files to convert to .mp4 before now!! I’ve been doing so for 2 years now with zero issues. I just got a new laptop, so disk space isn’t even remotely a problem. I use Maya 2026, and export playblasts as .avi (the only format for playblasts without rendering which would take me hours rather than seconds), and the only way I can import a video into a sequence is if the quality/scale has been reduced, resulting in a grainy and pixelated product. Why won’t it let me upload full 100% quality versions of my playblasts when I have been able to before. It says its a metadata xmp issue and there’s nothing but *exporter* issues resolved online. Pls help

@kepkeppler,

+1 for @PaulMurphy’s suggestion MediaInfo. I was curious since I don’t know Maya files. For me, seeing a problem with an AVI file not working on a new machine always raises the issue of the codec inside the AVI wrapper.

Do you have a short example file you can upload somewhere for us to test?

Can you share more info about the file? We know that AVI is the wrapper, but what codec is it using?

If you can show us the Tree view of the file loaded in MediaInfo, that might help us pinpoint the problem. You can download it here: https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download

It may also be worth going to Preferences > Media and disabling Write XMP ID to files on import (if it's currently enabled) to see if this fixes things.
