Files too big for PPro or my Mac?

Hello Community. I've inherited a Premiere Pro project with most of the media MPEG4 3840x2160. It seems to have worked for the original editor, but the files won't play on my Mac without staggering and pausing. Is this a problem with the specs of my Mac (4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16GB memory)?

What are the hard drives (how many, what kind, what is on each, what capacity, and how full)?

The project's come in from the States on a single 5TB LaCie Rugged, with around 3.75TB of media, the majority 3840x2160. I wondered if the problem lay with the drive, so I've copied individual files to a 7200rpm desktop drive, but the same issues. I'm hoping the problem doesn't lie with my OS - BIg Sur, or I'm looking at having to drop the job or buy a new Mac - long overdue, I guess, but this job doesn't really justify that.
