Fine tune editing with PIP and other things

I have a video. For the best scenario lets say I am duplicating a newscast. As I sit behind the desk and tell the story I want to mention a person and have them pop up in a PIP. I can do the PIP just fine. Its the duration of the PIP I need to control. I only need 2 or 3 seconds and I want to put several together at once. I have a laptop and a mouse pad attached. I can change the duration but cant seem to fine tune it down to the 2 second mark or even 1. do I need to get a hand held mouse to do it or is there another way I can accomplish this?

Thank you in advance.

I think you need the + and - keys. Activate the timeline window (single click on it) then press + and -, that will scale out the timeline so you can see finer detail in it, and then shrink the length of the clip, etc...

You can right-click on the clip that is your PIP and from the drop down menu choose Speed/Duration, and set the duration for the clip in the pane that opens.
