Question

glitchy playback when applying Unsharp Mask or some Red Giant plugins . High end System

I have a problem with playback realtime when applying unsharp mask or cosmo , denoiser from Red Giant .

My GPU usage drops at 2-3% when i apply them and all the stress goes to CPU that runs at 98% .

If i remove them i have smooth playback even with much bigger files like 4K 25p or 50p at  400Mbs/s and even with 6 luts , heavy color grading, standard  sharpen , gaussian blur etc. In this case my GPU runs at least 50% max 80% and CPU 10-20% .

I have noticed that if i apply fist unsharp mask and then any color grading the playback its less glitchy but even so still too much , the GPU usage drops again and using the wrong way the effect isnt the solution .

I am considering specially unsharp mask because its a must have - and less the red giant plugins but an advice will be appreciate .

Plz any help

I have HD1080 50p 100Mbs/s  H.264 .mov files from Gh5 .

I have a System with : Threadripper 1950x

                                    Asus 1080 Ti strix

                                    32 Gb 3200Mhz RAM

                                    SSD Kingston ( Boot System)

M.2 samsung evo 250gb (preview files)

Use Cineform proxies for that kind of media.

First, that media is hard on the CPU ... it's long-GOP, meaning there's only a complete "I" frame every 15-30 frames or so, in-between there's just data-sets of either the pixels that have changed since the last I-frame or will before the next I-frame ... or both. The CPU/RAM/threads/cores subsytem gets worked hard, it has to de-compress the complete frames & store to RAM, grab data-sets for the other frames and build those from the I-frame and data-set combined.

Colorists with vastly higher-end gear than you have routinely transcode it before grading in say Resolve, but can work without transcoding say 6k or 8k RED or Arri media that's in ProRes or other intraframe codecs.

Video de-noising is a real heavy drag on the computer also ... as are the Lumetri color effects. You're stacking several massive subsystem resource suckers there.

I know that many editors that need de-noising either apply that to original media, then export a 'fixed' high-Q file to replace that clip in the project, or ... apply de-noising only prior to export, but either way, they don't apply de-noising just on clips for typical playback.

So there are a couple things you can do in how you apply the effects, and if you front-load the work onto intermediate files.

Past that ... there's the proxy process that PrPro has. For your media, with all the effects, you definitely would want to use the small Cineform preset that is already there in the Create Proxy dialogs. Don't worry about the smaller frame-size, this is just for smooth playback. You toggle proxies on for playback, off to check quality of work.

So its mostly codec fault ?

Thanks a lot for your help Neil !!

Could you help me with  one more question , please ?

Why my GPU usage in these cases drops ; Is it like giving up ?

Its not just the code but also the effects.

Unsharpen mask and Red Giant are non gpu accelerated effects.
