Question

Graphics element don't show names in EDL

So we have a tool that reads EDL files from premiere to make a edit list in word so that notes can be made and given back to the editor.

this worked great for the Legacy Titles. However I just know that any day im gonna update premiere only to find them gone. So I have recreated my Titles in the form of Essential Graphics Templates.

The problem is this when I Export that track to and EDL all of the elements just show up as "Graphics"

000002 AX V C 01:00:00:00 01:00:05:00 00:00:07:29 00:00:12:29
* FROM CLIP NAME: Graphic

Even if I name the clip in the timeline using the content of th title the way I did in the legacy system I still get "* FROM CLIP NAME: Graphic" in the EDL file. is there an option that I'm missing or can Adobe make it so that the proper name fromt he timeline is reflected in the EDL export?

This is a total deal breaker and I have to come up with a solution for thhis before I can adopt this workflow.

You could convert your graphic to a Source Graphic (which will create a corresponding clip in the Project panel, similar to how the old legacy titles worked) by choosing Captions and Graphics > Upgrade to Source Graphic.

I just ran a test in Premiere 2024, and if I rename a graphic clip, even one that's not a Source Graphic, the new name carries over into the EDL.

I know I'm four years late to this thread, but I was looking for a solution to this problem recently and found this:

If you use a Transparent Video  (right click in the bin > new item > transparent video) then rename it to whatever you need, cut it into the timeline as required and add a "Simple Text" effect to it, then edit the text to whatever you need to appear on screen, EDLs will recognize the clip as what it's called in the bin, and not just call it graphic.

Just be sure to duplicate and rename the transparent video in the bin. You can't just reuse the same transparent video and edit the text effect. It needs to be a different transparent video for every shot number.

I've also found out that your process would probably only work with a single-layer text graphic in the old Titler ... whereas with the FCP XML process using EGP graphics it should reveal all text.

Now ... being able to quickly access that as you apparently did in the past might take a bit of sleuthing.

I've been told you might be able to get an FCP XML file to show the 'name' of the graphic meaning a line of text or so. But that there's no way to do this with an EDL. I don't know if your reader-app can parse FCP XML files also ...

Good point.

The UserVoice system is where you both comments directly to the engineers (yes, at least one engineer reads every post) and also every post there is delivered in collated form to the upper managers who determine budgets & such. I think this is something that needs attention.

So ... if you posted over there, then came back and posted a link, I'd be delighted to both upvote and comment on it.
