H.264 or MPEG-2 for 1080 DVD?

Hello,

I am very new to using Encore and I have a couple of questions...

I am using a Windows 7 operating system and I need to make a DVD for our company, preferably in 1080 quality. We don't have blu-ray players or blu-ray discs to write the file onto. Would I still be able to make a DVD in 1080 quality? Right now we have 4.7 GB single layer discs.

My other questions are in reference to the exporting process. I used Premiere Pro CC 2017 to export the file as an H.264 format with  the HD 1080p 29.97 preset selected (I didn't select the 'H.264 blu-ray' format due to us not having those options as stated above)...

I then sent it through Media Encoder and now I'm in Encore. I have the output selected as 1080, of course, but noticed that the only H.264 format option I'm given in the 'Edit quality presets' is H.264 blu-ray. On top of that, when I look to the right of the screen, under dimensions, it's telling me that it's at 720x480.

Again, this is very new to me, so I am quite confused. Can anyone help clear this up for me? Should I even be using H.264 or should it be MPEG-2?

Correct answer John T Smith

DVD is only 720x480 with PAR .9 to display at 4:3 or PAR = 1.212 for 16:9

Export from PPro using the MPEG2-DVD preset and import the two (audio and video) files in Encore

Somewhat dated now, but still a lot of good information

Added... there IS a way to put high definition on a DVD, but it will NOT play back in a DVD player

If we do get to a point where we can burn Blu-ray's, is 'MPEG-2 Blu-ray' still the format to go with, or should I select 'H.264 Blu-ray'?

Thanks again
