Has the function: "Upgrade to Source Graphic" changed?

I’m working in Premiere 2026.3.2 and (for my job) 2026.0.2.

Create Text with the Text Tool.

Select the Text Box in the sequence.

Go up to the “Graphics and Titles” pull-down menu.

Select “Upgrade to Source Graphic”. A “Graphic” element is now in your Bin.

Drag the Graphic element to the sequence and edit it. All good, Drag another and you can’t edit that one. The clip selection jumps back to the first instance you used to create the Source Graphic.

I understand this if you are using the Source Graphic multiple times in a sequence for a Lower Third. If you need a different Source Graphic to ID another person, you can duplicate the one in the bin, bring it into the sequence and update that without affecting the others.

Here is where it gets a little weird for me.

Delete the first instance in the sequence and the second instance becomes editable. Drag the Source Graphic to the sequence again and it is not editable. Clip selection jumps back to the second instance and so on. This seems very counter intuitive and not very productive.

I’m going into the manual for Premiere and see what changed. I’m coming from previous versions of Premiere and I don’t remember working with Source Graphics this way. I’m probably just getting old trying to keep up with these new-fangled procedures.

Thanks for listening.

    Hi, Kevin.

Here are 2 videos. Pt 1 is in the current release and Part 2 is showing how it works properly in the Beta version of Premiere.

    Thank you.

This may be a clue? Maybe not? I found the same behavior in Premiere 2023! Yes, I still have it so I can import from tapes with a Live Capture. Anyway...

I believe the “Upgrade to Source Graphic” was originally used for Legacy Titles? It looks like it wasn’t updated for Essential Graphics until the Beta version of 27? I no longer have installed 2024 or 2025 so I can’t test it.

I was able to reproduce this in 26.3.2, and it does appear to be a bug.

Incidentally, if you add the same Source Graphic to a new sequence (instead of the same sequence), all instances become editable, including the previous copy that was not.

    Hi, Paul.

    Thank you for your reply.

I just tried this on my PC and found the behavior to be the same as what I found. I created a new sequence, placed the upgraded Graphic into it and was not able to edit all instances by selecting them. Selecting the 2nd instance of the Graphic jumped back to the 1st. Editing the 1st instance does update all instances. The Beta version of Premiere 27 executes this correctly:

Upgrade to a Source Graphic. Drag the Graphic from the bin to the timeline and you can select that instance and edit it. This updates all instances as it should without having to jump back to the 1st instance.

Duplicating the Graphic in the Project Bin creates a separate Graphic that can be used say for a new Lower Third.

    Hey Bob,

Thanks for the post. I did some digging and haven't found any documentation or reports suggesting that this behavior is a known issue.

Perhaps a community member like @Stan Jones might assist.

Would you be able to share a short screen recording showing the steps and results you're seeing? Also, does this happen in both 26.3.2 and 26.0.2?

The behavior you're describing sounds unusual, so I'd like to gather a little more information before I bring it back to the team for further review.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hey there @KeulerB,

Thanks for the movies. I watched them and am clearer on the issue now. As @PaulMurphy indicates, it is a reproducible bug in the current version. However, you’ve shown that the issue in the first movie is fixed in Beta, as evidenced in the second movie.

Glad to see that it’s working correctly in Beta. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks again for documenting this so clearly.
