Help moving a project to another hard drive

Trying to move a project from my external HD to internal SSD because it lags on the external. I have copied the files to the SSD but can’t figure out how to run Premier to edit on the SSD. Have searched here and online for instructions with no luck. How do I do this?

Also, simply google “Premiere Pro using proxies”

and use 720p ProRes, don’t be tempted to using h.264/5, etc. Despite what the authors may say… :-)

You can use proxies also. 720p ProRes Proxies are great and make editing so much smoother. Premiere really makes it easy to use also.

Yes, rendering is a way to go if need be. You can change the preview files under Sequence Settings to ProRes 422 Proxy instead of LT, the file will be smaller.

I am still struggling with this. Is this the appropriate place to discuss? I have followed all the instructions here and still, very laggy. I did find that if I did a render in to out, I got smooth preview - but should I have to do that each time? Makes a huge file!

I am working with 4K. H.264 settings on my camera produce mp4 files, correct?

My SSD was nearly full. I am moving files now.

Hardware decoding is set to NVIDIA - but unlike your screenshot, mine shows both Nvidia and Intel as checked, if that matters?

I really appreciate you guys trying to help me out here…..

You asked my hardware specs:

Windows 11

Processor: 11 gen Intel i7-11700

32 GB RAM

Graphics card: Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti (8GB) and Intel UHD Graphics 750 (128 MB) (I assume that is the mother board card?)

I’m not real up on tech specs, etc. This configuration has worked well in the past, maybe not great, but adequate. Now, I am having a lot of issues with running Premier Pro on the machine. Any advice will be appreciated.

Tell us what media you are using, HD, DV, 4K, 8K and is it uncompressed or compressed such as mp4/H.264/H.265? Those things are important.

And, how much free space do you have on your media disk/s? Less than 10% free space is problematic.

Make sure to go to Edit > Preferences > Media and double check that your hardware decoding is set to Nvidia.

Well, with Premiere properly installed on the system/OS drive, you simply open Premiere, then use the open project dialog to search for the .prproj file, which is the project. Doesn’t matter what drive the project is on.

Thanks. That was a simple solution.

Now I am opening the project on my SSD, but it is still horribly laggy. I thought that moving it from an external to the SSD would solve that. I have cleared my cache and have the program monitor at ¼ . Has worked fine in the past.

Suggestions? Or should I make a new post?

@Lane23499113pawo Did you unplugg the external drive when you opened the moved project from your internal SSD? If not, Premiere will still use your external drive for the media files you have.

First delete the Media Cahce and the Media Cahce database > Unplug the external drive > Open from the internal SSD and relink media in Premiere when asked.
