HLG Footage when dynamic linking to After Effects

I see this issue being mentioned in a few other threads, but they are 1) marked as "solved" and 2) dated, so I'm asking again to try to bring in some more current information.

I have some HLG footage I shot on an iPhone 13 that I am editing in Premiere. Some of this footage is round-tripping from After Effects. I would like to work end-to-end in Rec2100HLG, outputting footage of the same quality and dynamic range that I started with.

I'm aware that:

  • my Sequence settings in Premiere need to be configured to use rec2100HLG
  • My White Point in my Project Settings in Premiere needs to be set to 203
  • My Project Settings in After Effects need to be configured to have a working space of rec2100HLG - W203
    • (what should the bit depth of this be? Presumably more than 8bits)
  • For each imported clip in AE, I need to ALSO set the Override Media Colorspace to rec2100HLG - W203

When I do all of the above, I can clearly see that the dynamically-linked AE compositions in Premiere still seem to be interpreted as Rec709. How does this get set, and how can I adjust it to be Rec2100HLG?

I'm further aware that I need to choose a preset when exporting my project from Premiere that allows for Rec2100, but it appears to me that there is a potential bug (or, at least, a very unclear workflow) that is causing the compositions from AE to be linked as Rec709.

I'm currently doing this editing on an M1 Max macbook, using Premiere/AE 2023.

I'm wondering if the Ae forum might be a good place to ask this ...

Indeed I do, yes.

One thing I notice when inspecting my footage in Aftereffects: it lists the media clips as having no color space (I would have expected AE could 'see' that it's rec2100hlg)

As you're on a Mac, do you have  both the Display Color Management and Extended Dynamic Range when available checked in the Preferences? The EDR option isn't to my knowledge needed on a PC.
