Horrible lag on playback. Impossible to work.

This is a bit of a rant at this point, but honestly I don't know how else to put it: premiere pro is seriously broken. I have been working on a feature documentary for a few months now. In the beginning, Premiere Pro showed no major issues, apart from ocassional minor lag. However, for the past 2 months, editing of any sort has become impossible. Playback (any playback) takes between 20seconds to more than a minute to begin. If pressed again, even when changing nothing, will result in the same absurd lag. I have tried everything to fix this: from changing to a faster machine (from a 2019 IMAC PRO, to a 2024 Macbook M3 Pro with 36Gb Memory), using fast SSDs and cables (several times tested in different configurations), copying the sequence content to a new sequence, copying the project to a new project file...everything! And no matter what, this simply doesn't work. I am not someone to just decide to change editing software in the middle of a big project, but if this doesn't get sorted soon, I will have no choice but to do that. Surely Davinci Resolve has issues as well, but at least I won't be paying an absurd monthly fee for something that is absolute crap at this point.  So, please, if someone is still working at Adobe - which might be a fantasy, and its all AI spitting crap code - fix this urgently or get ready to lose business.

Hey Sabine,

Thanks for the post. Yes, I've been in your shoes. Try this:

Hold Shift while launching Premiere. You’ll get a dialog box with options to:

  • Delete media cache (you may want to try this first—huge impact on long projects). If it doesn't help, launch again and try these:
  • Reset preferences (you’ll lose custom settings, but it’s worth testing)
  • Disable third-party plug-ins
  • Reset plug-in loading cache

 

This combo can fix a ton of lag and responsiveness issues—especially on projects that have been open for months.
