How can I fix performance issues in Adobe Premiere Pro when working with 4K footage?

I'm experiencing lag and slow rendering times while editing 4K videos in Adobe Premiere Pro, even with optimized media. I'm using a high-performance PC, but the playback still stutters, and export times are longer than expected. Are there specific settings or workflows I can adjust to improve performance?

Depending upon the answers to the questions posed by @R Neil Haugen , proxies might be the answer:

We need details or it's just guessing.

OS/RAM/GPU/vRAM, GPU driver, types of drives in use abd whether internal or external. With connection if external.

And media details  ... format/codec, framerate and framesize, 8/10/12 bit, created by what device?

How many tracks video, how many audio, and what effects in use?

Exports done on the same drive as media and/or projects, or to a different drive?

Everyone's mileage always varies ...
