How Can I Fix Video & Audio Problems in Premiere Pro CC (Unlinked Media & No Audio)

Late last year, after a few months of having used Premiere Pro CC, I started getting the 'Unlinked Media' error on video clips with audio without having modified these in any way since I last had the project open. Attempting to relink or replace footage would bring back the video, but I would be informed that it did not contain the associated audio now, so I would lose all the audio from those video files in whatever project I was working on completely, if I weren't fortunate enough to have exported it beforehand. After this these videos would never appear with any audio if I imported them into a project, forcing me to use separate video and audio files for this clip. Over time the frequency of this error has only increased, to the point where now it is having an extreme impact on my productivity using the software.

I've already checked around for solutions, and tried a few. One suggested cleaning out my Cache files, which didn't seem to help, while another linked a program called 'MPEG Streamclip' to essentially re-encode the videos so they'd work, which worked for the first day I used it before the same error persisted once again. At this point, it appears that every single video clip with audio I put into Premiere Pro CC comes up as having no associated audio, even ones exported from the software itself, making editing with the software increasingly difficult and time consuming for me in a way I feel is unfair given the monthly subscription I pay to keep it.

If there are any solutions for this problem I haven't yet tried I would be extremely grateful to hear them.

Hi dominicpowell98,

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try: FAQ: MP4, MOV, AVCHD files import without audio in Premiere Pro CC (2015.3) and CC 2017

Let us know if this doesn't help.

Hi Dominic

I've been experiencing similar problems in the latest version of CC 2017 (CC2017 Stopped Linking Media), where it was suggested I try rolling back to the previous version (I've been away on business so haven't had a chance to try yet).

If you are using the latest version, you could try that to troubleshoot if the problem is in the latest version or something else.

Regards,

Graham

Thanks. The first solution didn't do much, but the second seemed to fix it. I'm cautious on whether it'll work long term or whether the bug will reappear given how long the last one lasted, but for now it seems to alleviate the issue.

I'm glad the solution worked for you

FYI and people who might come across this thread later sometime:

This issue popped up a couple of releases earlier and we're trying hard to find a long term solution to this. Please be informed that it is a high priority issue for us and we are working on this.

Best,

This is an odd problem, so I'd ask a few questions first. Such as the number-dot-number version of PrPro, of course.

What media are you using ... camera/screen-capture whatever; what are the codecs/wrappers/formats involved; what is your media storage on for hardware, such as NVMe, SSD, spinning-disc hard-drive, and how connected, whether internal/external and ... USB, USB3, Thunderbolt, whatever any external connection might be.
