How can I use Gaussian Blur to blur only part of a clip?

I want to blur a name with 100% blur when it is visible on the screen. When the name is not visible, I want the blur effect to be turned off (set to 0%). If the name becomes visible again later in the same clip, I want the blur effect to return to 100%.  Is this possible, and can it be done within the same clip using keyframes?

We use Premiere 2026 version

    • Move the playhead to the point where the name appears in the clip.
    • In the Tools panel, click and hold the Object Mask tool, then select the Rectangle Mask tool.
    • In the Program panel, draw the mask around the name.
    • Add the Gaussian Blur effect to the clip.
    • Premiere Pro automatically applies the mask to the Gaussian Blur effect.
    • In the Effect Controls panel, click the stopwatch next to Rectangle Tool > Opacity. This lets you keyframe the mask's appearance, setting it to blurred (100%) or not blurred (0%).

Hi! I’m trying to do something similar - but my goal is to add blur to the entire clip. I’ve followed these steps, but it’s not working.

Just to clarify, the steps above use a rectangle mask to isolate one area of the frame, so if your goal is to blur the entire clip, you don't need the mask at all. Just apply Gaussian Blur directly to the clip and increase the Blurriness value.

If you did want to keep the mask and it's still not working, let me know what you're seeing. A screenshot of your Effect Controls panel would help me see where things are going wrong.
