How do I fix my Premiere Pro from randomly crashing when I drag those vertical lines between panels to make sections bigger or smaller?

Hi, 

I have been using Premiere Pro for a couple of years, and I recently got a new laptop. When I use Premiere, everything works fine except for one issue. Whenever I drag those vertical lines between panels to make sections bigger or smaller, Premiere freezes, and the screen turns black and then white (example of my project shown below). 

I’ve tried resetting the preferences, deleting the cache, and updating the program whenever needed. I don’t think the issue is related to my settings or my laptop, so I’m not sure what’s causing it. I find it strange that it only stops working when I drag the panel dividers to make certain sections bigger or smaller.

If anyone else has experienced this issue with Premiere and found a solution, I would really appreciate a response.

    @Ange27 Thanks for sharing, that is what I was looking for. While your GPU driver isn’t particularly old, there have been some updates since that one and I think that is the most likely thing to help. The current driver version is 32.101.8826 from June 3rd of this year. You can update your driver either by going to Windows Update in the Settings app, or if it’s not showing there, you can download it manually from Intel here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/785597/intel-arc-graphics-windows.html

     

    After updating the driver, restart your system and go to Task Manager and look at the GPU again to confirm the new version is showing there. Then, try out your project in Premiere again and hopefully you don’t see that anymore.

    Hi, I think the issue has been resolved!

    I manually downloaded the update, and my driver version is now 32.0.101.8826. I tested my project by moving around the panels. It was slightly glitchy, but there were no black or white screens, and all of my footage was visible.

     

    I just want to know (in case it happens again) how often should I update my graphics driver, and how will I know when it needs to be updated again?

    Do I only need to update it if problems start happening with programs like Premiere Pro?

    @Ange27 I’m glad to hear it! Graphics drivers are a tricky thing because they’re sort of the meeting point of many different variables. You could be using the same one for years with no problem, and then you update to a newer version of Premiere that tries to make use of some specific GPU hardware feature, and there’s suddenly an issue with your (now older) driver.

     

    Personally I just recommend if things are working and stable, don’t change anything. There might be new drivers from Intel every couple months or so, but if you’re not having an issue then don’t worry about updating. Maybe every year or so I might check and update my driver as sort of a good hygiene thing. But then if there is an issue like what you were experiencing – unexpected glitches in your footage or in the interface, things like that – then I’d reach for a driver update.

    @Ange27 I’m sorry that’s happening! Does Premiere crash (and disappear) or does it stay there just with black or white screens? Also, is this a Windows or Mac laptop, and what hardware specs?

    It actually does both, sometimes it crashes, and other times it stays stuck on the black-and-white screen. I tried looking at it yesterday, but my whole laptop froze, including the mouse. I had to completely shut down the laptop again. I have a Windows laptop.

    Installed RAM: 32.0 GB (31.5 GB usable)

    Graphics card: Intel(R) Arc(TM) 140V GPU (16GB) (128 MB)

    @Ange27 thank you. Our best guess at the moment is it’s something going wrong between Premiere, the graphics card driver, and Windows. It would be very useful to know which exact driver version you have for your Intel Arc GPU. A quick way to check is to open Task Manager, click on the Performance tab, then click on GPU, and to the bottom right it should mention a driver version number.
