Question

How do I keep audio in sync when cutting multicam clips in Premiere?

I’m editing an interview shot on two cameras plus a separate audio recorder in Premiere Pro. I synced everything with Merge Clips and made a multicam sequence, but after switching angles a few times, the audio sometimes drifts slightly out of sync with the video, especially in longer clips.

I’ve checked that all clips use the same frame rate, and I synced by audio waveform. Should I sync by timecode or by an in point marker instead? Is there a setting I’m missing that fixes drift in longer multicam sequences?

Any tips or a recommended workflow would help. Thanks!

Hi! A few points that should help:

There isn't a setting that fixes gradual drift. If a take starts in sync and slowly drifts, the cameras and the separate recorder were running on independent clocks, and Premiere can't lock those together.

Timecode sync only helps if all the devices shared, or were jammed to, the same timecode. Without that, syncing by audio waveform is the right starting point, and a clear In point such as a clap is a good backup.

Instead of Merge Clips for this, try rebuilding it as a multi-camera source sequence: select the camera clips and the recorder audio in the Project panel, right-click and choose Create Multi-Camera Source Sequence, then set the synchronize point to Audio. For a very long take that still drifts towards the end, split it partway through and re-sync the later section.

Adobe's guide to this workflow: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/set-up-multi-camera-sequences-for-editing/create-a-multi-camera-source-sequence.html

Hope that helps!
