How do I revert the ripple edit tool back to how it worked before the recent 2026 updates?

It used to be the case that if I wanted to trim something out from the start of a clip that was already on the timeline, and not have to lock any of the other tracks, I could just move my playhead to where I wanted the clip to start, then Ctrl/Cmd+Click on the current in-point of the clip, and then drag it to the playhead, where it would snap. Everything would stay exactly where it was until I’d let go of the mouse button. At which point the gap would close and everything on those tracks would ripple along.

But now, since updating to 26.0.1, for some unknown reason, when I try to use the ripple edit tool in the same way, everything ripples across in real time, which makes it almost impossible to see where my desired in-point is, unless I first put a marker on the footage first (which even then sometimes doesn't work, because sometimes the markers disappear when the ripple tool is in use). Or, I just move the in-point to where I want it, then click the gap and delete it.

I just don’t understand why this needed to change? It worked perfectly fine as it was. What problem was being solved here?

Yes, I know there are half a dozen other ways to work around this. But they invariably involve having to lock tracks, or do added steps, like setting in and out points, or cutting clips and ripple deleting unwanted sections, adding unnecessary markers to the clips. Why should I have to do any of this? Why have you taken a process that worked perfectly fine and pointlessly made it more convoluted?

a LOT of us are over in Reddit sharing our frustrations over this horrible change to Premiere, which I’ve not seen anyone (except Adobe staff) excited about.

I really hope they have the humility to change it back. It’s all the most experienced and professional editors who are most bothered by it:

I am also struggling and it is quite annoying to use ripple edit tool now. Earlier I used to place my playhead from where I want to ripple delete using ripple tool and clip used to shift along side and snap to the playhead but not now. Please fix this adobe.

I don’t understand why they didn’t document this change as it is a big one. I think it’s better as you can see in real time exactly what is happening as you Ripple trim.

May I ask - are you a professional editor, or you just dabble in it a bit for a hobby?

Not implying anything, I’m just interested to know, as 95% of the negative reactions to this change have been more experienced, professional editors.

I’ve been doing it awhile if you must know. It’s the feature changes that people don't like is what they take to the internet to talk about it and often complain. I would say that most professional editors don't click and drag to do precise trimming in the timeline. They use keyboard shortcuts and dynamic trimming. Like many big feature changes, it's the shock of the change that is most frustrating, but as I said before, seeing the trim move in context of the whole timeline is how every other modern editor works. Relying on making a trim by dragging your mouse to a waveform peak, while it can be useful, is not the only way to trim.

I would encourage you to make use of the Trim Forward, Trim Backwards, Trim Forward Many, and Trim Backward Many keyboard shortcuts as another way, and perhaps more precise way, to trim.

I’m wondering the same thing. Absolutely horrible change.
