How do you change speaker for part of a text in the transcript?

So I'm editing text in the transcript, but there is a second person talking in the text for a different speaker. I have no clue how to change the speaker on selected or highlighted text. I would like to do this because i want to export a transcript and having the correct speakers is important. Any help would be really appreciated thank you.

@defaultu3ajxdwzt0xo You need to first split Jerry's segment, then you can either merge that with Jessica's segment or just leave it as it's own segment and change the speaker to Jessica. Use the Split or Merge buttons at the top of the transcript.

the solution only works if Premiere has identified 2 separate speakers to begin with. I'm running into an issie where Premiere can tell the difference between 2 female voices, so I want to seprate them manually in the transcript, but cannot assign a chunk of dialogue to a different person if it's attached to 1 person

You have only Speaker 1. You want Speaker 1 and Speaker 2. And you want to assign the text accordingly.

The first part is easy. In Source Monitor view, click on Speaker 1 and "Edit Speaker." Then pick Add speaker. I'd assign actual names at the same time.

The second part is not great. For any segment that is all the wrong speaker, click on the speaker name and pick the other name.

And the third part is time-consuming. For each segment that is mixed, navigate in the Source monitor to the point where you want the separation, and click the split button. Or use a shortcut - but on Windows the default Alt+S works, but invokes the Alt drop-down of the menu options. Then, after splitting, reassign the incorrect speaker name.

Edit to add: merge was changed a while back, and you can actually drag multiple segments to merge them together. So, for example, if, after the splits, we have 3 segments that are all the same speaker, you can drag any part of 1 and 3 (with 2 included) and click merge, and you get one segment.

Thanks Stan, the main thing I needed was a reminded for where the 'split segment' command was. I have used it before a few months ago, so I knew the functionality was ther,e but couldn't find it for the life of me....
