Question

How does essential sound 'reduce noise' work?

To remove the air conditioning sound from my audio recordings, I use the 'Reduce Noise' feature in Premiere Pro's Essential Sound window. It works beautifully and doesn't affect the voice even when set to maximum. How does it work? It chops off all sound below a certain frequency? What frequency? And does it chop off all sound below that or just quiet it? Is there a way to configurate it?

I tried a high pass filter on my recording equipment (Zoom f4) to prevent sound below 80Hz from even being recorded, but I could still hear much of the air conditioning. Even when I tried cutting out everything below 120Hz, I could still hear the air conditioning a bit and it started distorting the voice.

What magic is premiere pro's reduce noise feature using?

When the Essential Sound Panel (ESP) applies any effect, you can see it pop up in the Effects Control Panel (ECP).

In this case, it's the Denoise effect, and if you click on the Edit button of that in the ECP you can see what it is set to.

The slider in the ESP when set to 8 sets the slider of Denoise to 80%, for instance.
