Question

How to apply edits and effects to a fill graphic for the text layer in the properties panel?

Greetings Adobe Community,

I am using the latest Premiere version 26.3.2. Getting into developing skills for kinetic typography motion graphics adverts. For now, we are not taking these too After Effects until we get the overall cuts, style and sound design, then we may push these to AE someday. As for now, we need to master these developments in Premiere first.

One of the problems I am running into is in the properties panel versus text fill. I prefer to avoid the track matte key and/or nested sequences (something referred to as nasty nesting), and this is where it was discovered that a fill can be applied in relation to the text layer.

So, I have the text layer selected with the text properties opened where I can apply a graphic fill, whether a still or video. I place this graphic fill under the text layer. In the property's options, the fill option is selected and !viola! the graphic fills the text. However, I can only position animate the motion of the fill in properties. How can effects (such as gaussian blur) be applied to this graphical element that is filled in the text, in the properties panel?

That is, without having to jacked up the image in a different sequence, then export/import and use the modified version!

Another problem I am running into is with transitions. Sometimes when the text is filled with a fill via the properties panel, and the text runs through a transition, strange things happen, and it varies, whether I do and/or do not use a blend mode. How do I get the text with fill to consistently behave as if its one singular unit in the hierarchy of effects?

Thank you for anything you can provide, and if anyone knows of an all-in-one video that shows all these particulars, to solve these technical issues, please provide a link.

    Hey there, FulSTak Videditr,

Thanks for the post. Yes, you can apply effects such as Gaussian Blur to the media you're using as the text Fill without nesting.

After adding the effect, look at the stacking order in the Properties panel. Drag the Gaussian Blur above the Fill in the stack. The blur will then affect the media being used to fill the text.

If you'd like to animate the blur, switch to the Effect Controls panel, where you can keyframe the Gaussian Blur parameters as usual.

So, for this particular treatment, you don't need to nest the graphic or use Track Matte Key.

There are some more complex combinations where nesting or a track matte may still be necessary. For example, if you need a treatment that combines this kind of media fill with a Stroke, you may need to build that using separate layers/nesting and a Track Matte Key.

For your transition issue, if you can provide a specific example of the transition and the unexpected result you're seeing, we can take a closer look at that separately.

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks,
    Kevin
