How to compress applauses?

I work recording audio conferences where the audience applauds a lot, and then I play my recordings in another auditorium. But the applauses become too mucho loud in the recordings (I use an excelent pair of speakers) and it hurts the ears of all the listeners, because the sound go until the peak and it bursts. When I use the compressor normally on my mixer (I use a soundcraft ui12 to play my audios), it compress also the conferencist´s voice, because sometimes the applauses are weaker, less stronger, than the conferencist´s voice, but their frequence is higher so it appears that they are louder.

Can I resolve this with a premiere pro audio effect?

Thank you!

you might even be able to use some section of JUST APPLAUSE as room tone, and see if that helps ( eliminate the room tone.. see how it effects the voice )

you want to use audition.  nobody knows but YOU what recording specs you have,,, are they mp3, wav, studio wav ?  you probably know that you will get best adjustments with a nice wav file .

The EQ in audition, high pass and low pass and a bunch of other stuff you can experiment with will at least IMPROVE what you have, if not altogether fix it.

    good luck !

Well, I have mp3 files. But I can´t do it manually beacause every has in average 1 hour 1/2, with a lot of applause... There´s an automatic way?
