How to create a fake shadow?

I am trying to shoot a scene where a person is exiting a room and a shadow of that person follows. How do I create a shadow like this? Is there a way I can physically shoot this, or is there a way I can edit it in in premiere pro?

This is the kind of thing typically done with CGI, I think.  Even AE may not be the right tool.  Cinema 4D maybe?

Honestly, there's really no tool in Premiere itself that will help you achieve this sort of an effect. You're looking at After Effects at the least, although this will still be challenging. You're unlikely to produce a realistic animated human shadow from scratch in AE. You'd be better off shooting one for real against a green screen and using various keying and/or matte effects to isolate it. Are you trying to get the shadow to match the exact movements of the actor, just slightly delayed? Or is this like some sorta independent, conscious shadow character that moves on its own?

It's a shadow that's slightly delayed. So a person walks out, then the shadow follows shortly after. It's the shadow of that same person. I am using a shadow as part of my story to symbolize the person's alter ego.

Perhaps then I will mess around with the focus of my camera to emphasize the shadow, that seems like the best thing I can do right now.
