How to edit incorrect gaps in transcripts (premiere Pro)

Question

I'm editing a video where the speaker has a disability meaning their speech is not always clear, because of that I'm tring to use the transcript feature to add captions to the video so they can be understood by everyone. However, I keep hitting an issue where premiere has decided there is a gap where they are in fact speaking. I understand that I will need to edit the rest of the text but because it has decided there is a gap there I cannot make it highlight the word at the correct point because it' doesn't believe there is a word there. Is there any way to correct the timings of a gap? I have tried messing with the length of pause to create a gap but it's no good. Anyone know better than me please?

Try this, and let us know if it works. It worked for me just now, but actual transcripts can pose unexpected challenges.

In my test sample, there is a pause/filler indicator where the speaker laughs and then says "um." Place the cursor just before the indicator, but mostly note the word just after you will be adding text. In other words, don't try to select or remove the indicator, just ignore it. Hit <Enter> to enter edit mode, type in what you want to add (for me, "[Laugh] Um, "), and hit Esc to complete. For me, the timing is correct and the pause/filler indicator is removed. It wouldn't matter if the indicator remained, since it will have no effect on creation of captions.
